On Sunday evenings we have started a series looking through the book of 1 Thessalonians in a series entitled "Keep on Keeping On".
The first letter of Paul to the Thessalonians is a letter full of love and concern. It is the only letter of Paul that does not include any word of rebuke, as he seeks to encourage these young believers in their faith.
Paul had a really difficult time in Thessalonica. Although he saw both Jews and Gentiles turn to God, the Jewish leaders of the Synagogue, jealous that so many were turning to Jesus, incited a violent crowd. Failing to find Paul, they found a new convert, Jason, in whose house the new church were meeting. The other believers urged Paul to leave, and so after only 3 weeks Paul had to move on.
Now in Corinth, Paul is concerned to learn more about how these believers are doing under such intense persecution. He sends Timothy back, who brings back a really encouraging report. They are doing well, and the report of their faith and boldness is being heard about all over the world! And so Paul sends Timothy back with this letter, a letter to encourage the Thessalonians to keep on keeping on in the faith.
This letter is such an encouragement to all new believers, as well as a help to those who have known Jesus as their saviour for many years. It deals with aspects of our faith such as assurance, encouragement, witness, a life led for God's glory, love for God's people, and living in the light of God's purposes. We trust that this letter will also be an encouragement for you, as you seek to live for Jesus too.
