On Sunday evenings we ran a series looking through the book of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah is a difficult book to read, and many believers are confused by the book when they read it in their own personal studies. This is primarily because of the non-chronological nature of the book, making the problems that Jeremiah is speaking to difficult to identify. However, it is a book that is so hugely relevant to our time, our position as believers today, and our nation.
The message of Jeremiah consists of many calls. Above all there is the constant call to Jeremiah to stand firm though all others turn away and though other teachers speak things that are not from God. Unsurprisingly, Jeremiah finds this such a difficult thing to do! His 'complaints' to God and difficulties are written so plainly and touch our own hearts as we see ourselves so often in a similar position. How we also need to hear God's response.
But there is also the constant call to God's people, and the awful warnings, that we cannot ignore ourselves. Although our security in Jesus, if we are believers, is sure (Phil 1:6), yet we too are warned (Rom 11:31-32) to be careful that we do not drift away from Him. The call is to be believers rooted deep upon the "living water" of our God, not wandering from Him.
And so, the message throughout Jeremiah is to Stand Firm!
